In May 2008 a quite special ship was launched in Hamburg: the full-scale reconstruction of a Roman warship. The “Victoria”, 16 metres long and almost three metres wide, sailed this summer on, amongst others, waterways used by Romans at the time of Emperor Augustus: Rhine, Ems, Weser and Elbe. On board: comprehensive information on the exhibition project “IMPERIUM CONFLICT MYTH. 2000 Years Varus Battle”.
In 2009 too the order will ring out: “Cast off and to the oars” – then the ship, with its almost four tons, will continue its exciting journey. “On board ship”: members of the public can take their turn rowing at one of the 20 rowers’ places and so experience something of Roman history at first hand.
The Book on the Ship

To coincide with the naming of the ship the book on the project has appeared. Koehlers Verlagsgsellschaft in Hamburg have published Dr. Rudolf Asskamp and Prof. Dr. Christoph Schäfer’s book, “Projekt Römerschiff”. It can be bought in all bookshops or from the publishers.
