Roman coins
LWL-Römermuseum / Seestadthalle

The Roman military facilities in Haltern are amongst the most important and best researched complexes in the Imperium Romanum at the time of Augustus.

In the year 9 AD the Roman Empire had never been more extensive, a province of Germania east of the Rhine was within reach and Haltern set to become its administrative and military centre.

Against this background, the LWL-Römermuseum will be presenting the Imperium at the height of its power, its art, culture and propaganda at the time of the Roman emperor, Augustus.

The political and military consequences of the Varus Battle for the ancient world in general and Roman foreign policy in particular will be treated, as well as the life of Publius Quinctilius Varus, the protagonist of the battle, who gave his name to it, and the geographical locations associated with him.
